External Rim Lock
Outdoor locks face four major environmental challenges.
Indoor locks only need to resist forced entry. Outdoor locks must withstand rain, salt, heat, and freezing temperatures. These are the four primary environmental stress factors we designed against.
This external rim lock is manufactured using premium materials only: 316 stainless steel or solid brass. No zinc alloy is used. Zinc alloy will blister and degrade into powder within six months of outdoor exposure.
316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, providing superior corrosion resistance. In salt spray testing, it reaches 96 hours without red rust, meeting EN 1670 Grade C4 requirements-the highest European classification for corrosion resistance.
We pushed performance further. At 120 hours of continuous salt spray exposure, the 316 sample showed only minor white oxidation at the edges, while the 304 stainless steel sample developed red rust at 72 hours.
Performance in Cold Conditions
Extreme cold does not affect the lock's operation.
We tested the lock across a temperature range of -20°C to +70°C with no functional issues.
Last winter, 200 units of this external rim lock were installed in a residential project in Harbin. Temperatures dropped to -30°C. The bolt operated normally, and the key function remained smooth. At this temperature, conventional locks often fail due to lubricant solidification, preventing key insertion.
Security Features
The bolt incorporates three anti-forcing properties: anti-pull, anti-pry, and anti-saw protection.
The bolt is made from 316 stainless steel. The water resistance rating is IP54 or higher, meaning it is protected against rain and water spray, though not designed for submersion.
Sealing is achieved using silicone rubber, which remains flexible at -40°C and stable up to +80°C, unlike standard rubber materials that harden or degrade under extreme conditions.
Testing and Certification
We manufacture in accordance with strict European standards.
Wenzhong is among the few lock manufacturers in China capable of full EN 1670 Grade C4 testing. Every production batch is independently tested by third-party laboratories, and a full C4 compliance report is provided.
Material verification using spectrometer testing can be conducted on-site upon request.
The outdoor warranty period is 2 years, covering corrosion resistance and aging of non-metal components.
Applications
This external rim lock is suitable for door thicknesses of 40mm to 55mm. The surface finish is outdoor-grade coating, designed to resist fading for up to 5 years.
Typical applications include coastal villas, mountain guesthouses, outdoor electrical enclosures, telecom base station cabinets, and open-air storage facilities.
